Storage, with no office suite attached.
OneDrive arrives bundled with Microsoft 365 and keys Microsoft holds. Offkeep sells one thing, by the gigabyte, and cannot read any of it.
Offkeep vs Microsoft OneDrive
OneDrive is deeply integrated with Windows and Microsoft 365 — but Microsoft holds your encryption keys. Offkeep doesn't.

Where Offkeep pulls ahead
Microsoft cannot read your files
OneDrive stores files in a form Microsoft can access — for compliance scanning, support, and lawful requests. Offkeep's zero-knowledge design means no party, including us, can decrypt what you store. Your key never leaves your device.
More free storage, no bundle required
OneDrive offers 5 GB free; a meaningful bump to 1 TB requires a Microsoft 365 subscription that bundles software you may not need. Offkeep gives you 6 GB free and sells storage standalone — no Office subscription, no lock-in.
Works everywhere, not just Windows
OneDrive's best experience is on Windows — macOS support lags, and there's no Linux client at all. Offkeep ships native apps for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and works in any browser, so your files follow you regardless of platform.
Offkeep vs OneDrive FAQ
Does OneDrive encrypt my files?
OneDrive encrypts files at rest and in transit, but Microsoft holds the encryption keys. This means Microsoft and any party with legal authority can access your data. Offkeep uses end-to-end encryption: your key is derived from your password and never transmitted — not even to us.
Is Offkeep a good OneDrive replacement if I use Microsoft 365?
If you rely on Word, Excel, or PowerPoint in the browser, those remain Microsoft products. Offkeep replaces OneDrive as your file storage and sync layer — you can continue using Office apps while keeping your actual files in encrypted, private storage.
Is Offkeep more expensive than OneDrive?
Offkeep bills whichever is cheaper, the meter or a plan — either way you only pay for what you actually store. For 100 GB, Offkeep costs $0.94/mo versus OneDrive standalone at $1.99/mo. Microsoft 365 Personal (which bundles OneDrive) costs $9.99/mo for 1 TB; Offkeep charges $8.00/mo for the same storage — without bundling software you may not need.
Is there a Linux client?
Yes. Offkeep ships native clients for macOS, Windows, and Linux. OneDrive has no official Linux client; the community-maintained rclone bridge is the closest alternative, but it is unsupported by Microsoft.
